Catholic Catechism Teachers Receive Formation Training in MyanmarKalaymyo (May 4-6,2026)
A three-day Catholic Catechesis Teachers’ Training was held from May 4–6, 2026, at Sacred Heart Church in Kalay Zone, bringing together catechism teachers from parishes across the region.
The training program was organized following a decision made by the priests of Kalay Zone with the aim of strengthening catechetical formation and improving systematic religious education for children throughout the Diocese of Kalay.
The opening session began with an address by Rev. Fr. Joseph Kap Tung Nung, Parish Priest of St. Theresa’s Church, Tahan, and Vicar Forane of Kalay Zone. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of catechism teachers in the mission of the Church and encouraged participants to teach children with dedication, joy, and a missionary spirit.
“The catechism teachers are the light for our Diocese and for the whole Catholic Church,” he said, adding that the zone-level training would greatly benefit the future faith formation of children in the diocese.
The training sessions were led by Rev. Fr. Damian Zam Sian Dal, Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church, Hlaingthaya-Phai, who is also known for producing catechism books for children and guidelines for Sunday School teachers. Drawing from Vatican documents, theological studies, and personal pastoral experience, he provided practical methods for effective catechetical teaching.
Fr. Damian, who holds a doctorate degree in Systematic Theology from KU Leuven, also introduced several catechism books to be used in the Diocese. The books were translated and produced by Rev. Fr. John Hau Hawm Mang, Rev. Fr. Titus Zam Lian Pau, Fr. Damian himself, and other contributors in the Diocese.
He explained that different methods are needed when teaching children catechism. “Some books need to be explained to the children, while others can be read by the children themselves,” he said. “Teachers need to use methods such as reading together with the children, reading with rhythm like a song, and telling lessons like stories so that the children can memorize them more easily.”
Participants were also introduced to the Catechism of the Catholic Church as an essential guide for faith education.
The expenses for the training were covered by the Kalay Zone Fund. Catechism teachers from various parishes participated, including St. Mary’s Cathedral, Kalay; St. Theresa’s Church, Tahan; Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Tazin; Sacred Heart Church, Phai; and St. Peter’s Church, Munlai.
The organizers expressed hope that the training would strengthen catechetical ministry in the region and inspire teachers to continue nurturing the faith of young Catholics with renewed commitment and enthusiasm.
